When the curators of the 2017 Whitney Biennial contacted me, my first thought was to decline the invitation. I was feeling more than usually disappointed with the state of art — and really the state of the world generally. But in our studio visit, during which I made my aforementioned disappointment abundantly clear, the notion of sincerity crept compellingly into the conversation.
